In his famous rules for living, Neil Postman includes, "Don't get divorced. You really think you can do better?" Except in cases of abuse, I've found this to be true. Obvs he was talking about the one who chooses to leave, because when I was the one who left, I had six years of golden solitude (there's your golden age) and the then love and ease of mind.
